Modular Synthesizer Ensemble at Superbooth 23

video upload by Sine Community

"The 'Modular Synthesizer Ensemble' is a social-acoustic and participative music project and offers the possibility to make music together in an ensemble without any previous musical knowledge.

The project makes it possible to design the process of creating electronic sounds with the analog Modular Synthesizer. The participants experiment, improvise and compose together and perform the results live in public.

In collaboration with the Miller-Zillmer Foundation which supports people regardless of their social and national background and promotes projects that are sustainable, that empower and create education, while adding value to the broader community.

Driven by a cultural led philosophy delivering interesting visions. We stand up for human rights and integration, for social inclusion, respect and tolerance, world openness and the protection of cultural assets. A foundation for important works of collaboration and engagement.

A transcript of the interview prior to the Modular Synthesizer Ensemble performing at SuperBooth 2023 can be found on the Sine Community website at https://sinecommunity.com/modular-syn...

The composition used in the last song is part of Vōlc's (@volc5406) song the matrix which was performed and debuted on Saturday the 29th of October 2022 during Modfest 2 (Modular Festival Auckland) in Red Bar, #Auckland

The Endorphin.es performance modular synthesizer is the result of 5 years of intense development — module after module was put together neatly by the team at Endorphines to finally create an instrument in a class of it’s own—a set of well selected devices for musicians to imagine music and bring it to life in the most pleasant way.

With the Shuttle System you obtain 5 Endorphin.es modules in a 84hp @FrapTools PLUS case with handmade Endorphin.es signature silkscreen printing, a PSU, a set of cables and a carrying bag. The whole Shuttle System is around 43-44 cm long which is the approximate size allowed in almost every airliner to ensure safe traveling with your instrument.

The portable power adapters ensure the use of instrument in any part of the world — no matter what the voltages is coming from the power receptacle.

The Shuttle's front panel is secured in the case with @Befacosynth Knurlies for ultra-fast access to the backside of the modules for trimming their parameters, setting jumpers (stereo/mono channels) on Cockpit 2 or installing the rich-in-timbres Strong-Zero VCO core onto Furthrrrr Generator.

The following modules are included in Shuttle System:

Shuttle Control - 16 channel USB to MIDI to CV interface with almost infinite possibilities interpreting MIDI events into analogue control voltages—including CV/Gate, random or noise generators, MIDI or tap-clocks, utility LFOs and envelopes. (Find out more here: https://synthesizer.nz/products/endor...)

(Find out more here: https://synthesizer.nz/products/endor...)

Cockpit 2 - 4 stereo channel mixer with sidechain ducking (Find out more here: https://synthesizer.nz/products/endor...)

Gateway - dual 1+1 utility mixer and auto-tuners to scale, offset and invert voltages"

Bastl Instruments Dark Matter & Waver feedback

video upload by Synthesizer New Zealand

"Today we will be having a closer look at @Bastl Instruments Dark Matter & Waver and dive deep into the world of envelope followers by feeding some audio into the input of Dark Matter.

A little crazy. Untamed. Evocative, deep & kind of awful. And don't forget, totally beautiful.

Dark Matter is a high energy sound processor and signal generator that unleashes the crazy raw power of audio feedback into your eurorack system. In this video it teams up with Bastl Instrument's Pizza, the compact digital oscillator with powerful wave shaping applied to FM synthesis & Waver, a fully analog, wave folding mixer and signal disruptor inspired by experimental mixing techniques and mind-melting drones.

This is the first video I'll be doing on this channel and I'm planning to do a lot more, there is lots to learn about content creation but it was fun to make this video. I hope you enjoy too!

Time markers for your convenience:

00:28 - Introduction Dark Matter

Gamechanger | Audio launches crowdfunding campaign for electro-mechanical MOTOR Synth

"RIGA, LATVIA: having successfully showcased MOTOR Synth as the world’s first electro-mechanical desktop synthesizer at SUPERBOOTH19 in Berlin, May 9-11 — wowing well-known attendees like legendary French electronic music pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre and Atlanta-based American electronic musician and acclaimed sound designer Richard Devine in doing so, uncharted music electronics territories explorer Gamechanger | Audio is proud to announce that its IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign starts on Tuesday, May 28 (at 4PM GMT)…

Once its IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign commences, MOTOR Synth will be available to pre-order — prices starting at $749.00 USD — for 30 days. After the crowdfunding campaign closes, MOTOR Synth will only be available for online and in-store purchase at an MSRP (Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price) of $1,299.00 USD when shipping starts, scheduled for around November/December 2019.

As the world’s first electro-mechanical desktop synthesizer, MOTOR Synth really represents a new method of analogue audio signal synthesis since digitally-controlled electromotors (used to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy) have never before been used as the principal sound source for a commercial musical instrument. In a nutshell, MOTOR Synth produces sounds by accelerating and decelerating eight electromotors to precise RPMs (revolutions per minute) that correspond with specific musical notes. Each electromotor is fitted with a magnetic pickup/inductor and an infrared photosensor that reads a spinning optical disc with printed sine, sawtooth, and square wave-shapes. Besides using motors as oscillators, the rest of the synth’s features are designed in the best tradition of analogue gear.

New Synth Book: The Prophet from Silicon Valley: The Complete Story of Sequential Circuits

via Amazon:

Update: I forgot to mention, Amazon has a preview of the book you can flip through online.  Click through the link above to check it out if you haven't already.

"The story of Sequential Circuits, the leading synthesizer manufacturer of the 1980s. One of the great American synthesizer companies, founded and led by San Francisco electronics and computer graduate, Dave Smith, Sequential Circuits Inc. paved the way for music of the future. Smith brought easy, affordable and powerful polyphonic synthesis to all levels of music production in the form of the ground-breaking Prophet-5 synthesizer. Released in 1978, the Prophet led the new wave movement into the next decade, creating a sonically exciting soundtrack to eighties culture. It expanded the palette of all music genres and was embraced by professionals and amateurs alike. Sequential Circuits went on to create further innovative concepts and products such as programmable effects, MIDI, multitimbrality, high-quality sampling, workstation and MPC systems and many more. Today the Prophet-5 is very much sought-after as one of those truly iconic classic musical instruments. The book features many exclusive and highly entertaining and informative stories from ex-Sequential staff, music industry moguls, and famous keyboard players. Includes over 240 photos and illustrations (paperback)"

by David Abernethy

Reviews:

Mark Vail, Music journalist, author, teacher, musician: 'The story of Sequential Circuits includes thrilling successes and unfortunate demise. Thanks to Dave Smith's contributions to electronic music, we in the industry owe him dearly. Through thorough research and by reaching out to many artists who benefited from Sequential Circuits' instruments and Dave Smith's work, David Abernethy delivers the essence of the story in this beautifully written and detailed book.'

Dominic Milano, Keyboard magazine writer/reviewer, editor: 'David Abernethy has left no stone unturned in researching this incredibly detailed account of how Dave Smith and Sequential Circuits unseated Moog and ARP to become the leading synthesizer manufacturer of the 1980s. The Prophet from Silicon Valley is a must-read for synth junkies and students of musical instrument design.'

Stanley Jungleib, Sequential's Publications Manager, Seer Systems founder: 'Sequential was the dominant US synthesizer think-tank for a decade. David Abernethy fairly and carefully accounts for the diverse contributions of the talented lot that made it work. Anyone interested in making their career in this business should study its lessons, as many of Sequential's graduates remain influential in the field to this day.'

The Bit-52's The World's Greatest Parts Band playing The B-52's - Rock Lobster

YouTube via bd594 | September 07, 2010

From the man who brought us Bohemian Rhapsody and Funkytown.
"What do you get when you combine retro computer parts and an up and coming robot band?

The Bit-52's

This is dedicated to all fans of The B-52's who are also known as the "Worlds Greatest Party Band". It just so happens they currently on tour so go out and buy some tickets. This idea has been simmering in my mind for the last couple of years and after many months of procrastinating it is finally complete. I was also motivated to finish my robot band after seeing a YouTube Video from "The Trons" from New Zealand.

The Bit-52's consist of:

Fred's Vocals - TI99/4a computer, speech synthesizer and terminal emulator ii module
Kate and Cindy's Vocals - Two HP Scanjet 3C scanners, UBunto and sjetplay written by GanjaTron
The Guitar, Keyboard, Cow Bell, Cymbal and Tambourine are all controlled by various types of push/pull solenoinds for a total of 23. The Solenoids are powered by four ULN2803 darlington drivers and everything is controlled by two PIC16F84A microcontrollers."

Ian Mason - Gotta Lotta Love (1978)

YouTube via nzoz1978. sent my way via Ian. Spot the synths.
"Music from Australia and New Zealand in the year 1978:

Ian Mason's promo-video for the single 'Gotta Lotta Love' taken from the 1978 album 'Nobody Takes Me Seriously'.

This track was produced by John Farrar; most famous for writing hits for Olivia Newtown-John.

Ian Mason:

Ian Mason began playing in bands as a teenager, during the 1960's. His own band Mason's Cure (later known as 'Stylus) made a name for themselves in Australia as a live act.

Ian Mason also became an in-demand Jingle composer during the '70's. He composed many memorable advertising Jingles for radio and television. One of his most remarkable pieces was a 1978 Jingle he did for Melbourne radio station 3XY. The jingle was 'I Can Feel It' and was performed by the 3XY Supergroup Party which featured 300 of Australia's finest performers and musicians (found on NZOZ1978 under the title '3XY Supergroup Party - 3XY Radio Promo (1978').

During the early 1980's, he bought a-state-of-the-art recording studio called 'The Music Farm', which was used by many famous Australian and international musicians; including Australian Crawl, Mi-Sex, Moving Pictures, Tim Finn, Redgum, Goanna
Band, Divinyls, INXS, Jimmy Barnes and Midnight Oil. He has worked and traveled overseas - playing with Stevie Wonder, Toto and many others.

Ian Mason remains an in-demand musician and is greatly respected by his peers and the music industry.

Ian is now working as a composer of film and television and is currently producing his first Feature Film!
